The US Master's
Application Timeline

For Chinese students already doing undergrad / transfer in the U.S. Your U.S.-degree background makes this timeline lighter than a domestic applicant's — but hides three traps of its own. Includes a reverse-timeline generator.

An application cycle isn't counted from "start studying" — it's reverse-engineered from day one of class. Fix the intake first, then drop every step onto a real month.

Executive summary

Five calls that define your cycle

English tests are likely waived. Most programs waive TOEFL/IELTS for U.S. bachelor's holders; some require transfers to have studied ≥2 years in the U.S., with the degree completed at the time of application — confirm per school.
No WES evaluation. Your U.S. transcript is accepted directly — skipping the step that eats domestic applicants' time.
Classify before scheduling. STEM = GRE + fixed deadlines; business = GMAT Focus + rounds (R1 matters most). Two different skeletons.
Visa = a level change. Same-school progression uses a change of level (new I-20 within the 60-day grace); a different school uses a SEVIS transfer. Your SEVIS ID and visa stamp usually stay.
Don't waste bachelor's OPT. It dies the day your master's begins — while a STEM master's grants 36 months of OPT, a hidden weight in school choice.

Three Things Your U.S. Degree Removes

Most "US master's timelines" are written for domestic-China applicants — assuming TOEFL, WES, and a fresh F-1. Your starting point is different. Cross these three off first.

English test: likely waived. USC, UT Austin, Cornell, Brown, Georgia Tech, UMD and others waive it for U.S. bachelor's holders. Two conditions: the degree must be completed at time of application; some require transfers to have studied ≥2 years physically in the U.S. (not branch/online).
Credential evaluation: not needed. WES/ECE course-by-course reports are for foreign degrees; your U.S. transcript is taken at face value.
Visa: not from scratch. You already hold F-1; you only do a "change of level" or "SEVIS transfer" (Section 06) — usually no new visa needed.
What it means

You save not just time but energy and certainty: redirect the months others spend on TOEFL, WES, and visas into school selection, essays, and (if needed) the GRE/GMAT. But always verify the English waiver on each school's site — policies vary by school and program.

先分类Classify

Three Tracks, Three Skeletons

Before scheduling, pin your track — it decides which test you take and whether you submit by a fixed deadline or in rounds.

Key timing

The truth about rounds

In rounds, international applicants should target R1 or R2: scholarships are richest early, and you need runway for the visa (I-20, possible interview). R3 is high-risk for internationals — seats and aid are nearly gone, and visa timing gets tight.

Tip: paste these milestones into your calendar, then calibrate to each school's official deadlines — especially funding and any "apply early" waiver windows.

04
Testing

Tests: Whether, Which, When

Your English test is likely waived, but GRE/GMAT may still apply. Decide "whether" before "when" — this is the step that most often derails the whole schedule.

GRE (STEM/General): shortened to ~1h58m since 2023; valid 5 years. Many programs are optional now, but top/impacted STEM still rewards a competitive score.
GMAT Focus (Business): replaced the classic in 2024 — 2h15m, 205–805, new Data Insights section; valid 5 years, ≥16 days between attempts, max 5/year, year-round.
Leave a retake window. Get a first score 6–12 months before deadlines, so you can retake at least once. For business, finish before R1.
The waiver trap · lead time

A business test waiver may need pre-approval

Many business programs grant GMAT/GRE waivers to applicants with a 3.4+ GPA in a quant/STEM field, work experience, or a prior graduate degree. But some schools (e.g., NYU Stern, UT McCombs) require the waiver to be approved 15–30 days before you submit. Treat "request the waiver" as its own, earlier deadline — don't discover the lead time at the last minute.

05
Materials

Materials: What to Start Early, and How Early

Some materials are on you and compressible; some depend on others and aren't. Starting the "depends-on-others" ones first is how you avoid a crash.

Recommendations (least compressible): usually 3, ideally professors for academic programs. Ask 6–8 weeks ahead with your CV, transcript, target list, and talking points. Giving recommenders buffer is the single best thing to front-load.
SOP / personal statement: budget 4–6 weeks of iteration. Each school needs a tailored "why this program" paragraph — don't mass-send one draft.
CV / résumé: foreground research, projects, internships, quantified results; one page (two for some academic programs).
Transcripts: sent officially/electronically from your U.S. school — no WES. Note: transfers usually must submit every institution attended.
06
OPTVisa · OPT

签证与 OPT 衔接(美本独有)Visa & OPT Hand-off (Unique to You)

The part U.S.-degree applicants most need — and least often hear clearly. After admission, how your status bridges from bachelor's to master's decides whether you start on time and how your precious OPT gets used.

Same school = Change of Level. Request the new I-20 within the 60-day grace period after your bachelor's ends; the new program must begin within 5 months. SEVIS ID and school name stay; an unexpired F-1 stamp usually still works. Miss the 60-day window and you must depart, get a new initial I-20, and repay the SEVIS fee.
Different school = SEVIS transfer. Same process as undergrad transfer (see our Community College Transfer Checklist, §06): your DSO releases SEVIS, the new school issues an I-20, you report within 15 days of the start.
The new I-20 needs proof of funds. SEVIS checks it; insufficient funds = no I-20. Prepare one academic year of master's tuition + living costs.
OPTThe costly trap · OPT

Your bachelor's OPT dies the day the master's begins

You may work on bachelor's OPT in the summer between degrees, but it terminates the day your new program starts — even if the EAD's printed date is later. So "briefly using" bachelor's OPT often isn't worth it. Conversely, a STEM master's grants 12+24 = 36 months of OPT — a badly underrated weight in school choice. If you'll use bachelor's OPT, apply 90 days before your program end; USCIS often takes months.

Budget

Budget: Where the Money Goes, and When

The application season itself costs money. Knowing the rough numbers ahead avoids a deadline-time scramble.

When
GRE~$220考试前;含寄送 4 所免费at test; 4 free score sends
GMAT Focus~$275–300考试前(考场/在线)at test (center/online)
递交时at submission
入学定金 / 押金Enrollment deposit~$200–1,000+接 offer 时(常 4 月)on accept (often April)
Where to save

You've already saved on TOEFL (~$200) and a WES evaluation (~$160–200). Reserve the GRE's 4 free score sends for your top choices and set them at submission, rather than paying per-school later.
